Thousands
turn up for D&S Opening Meet, West Somerset Free Press,
Friday, 17th August 2001
Despite the fact that hunting stands suspended because
of the foot-and-mouth epidemic, the Devon & Somerset
Staghounds had their opening meet at their kennels at Exford on
Saturday and turned the day into a massive picnic. Thousands from
all over the country enjoyed this first gathering of hunts since
the foot-and-mouth outbreak - hunts from as far apart as Scotland
and the Lizard made the long journey to celebrate.
Addressing the picnickers, D&SSH joint master Diana Scott
said the last time the hunt met but did not hunt was at the
outbreak of World War One when the master Major Morland Greig met
at Cloutsham, on Exmoor, before going off to war (he never
returned). She urged the Government to be more convincing and
understanding to the farming and rural communities. People were
living through the worst events in their own living memories,
with nothing coming through to those who were suffering. Hounds
and horses were presented and, although they had not hunted for
some months, they have been regularly exercised and kept fit, a
tribute to the dedicated hunt staff. She reminded the crowd that
farmers, landowners and hunts were continuing to monitor
wildlife, being particularly mindful of injured animals from road
and other accidents.
